Professor, D.Sc. in engineering, marked expert in new constructional and functional materials.

In 1969 graduated from Dnepropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute. In 1980 defended PhD thesis and till 1997 had worked as professor at National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine. 

Vladimir Shapovalov created new scientific direction on the base of his discovery (No 313, priority of 1986) - materials science metal-gas system. 
Within a short time, he developed foundations of unique technology of deformation of metals without external mechanical effect using consistently controlled thermal field and hydrogen atmosphere. For the first time there were created new honeycomb-structured composite materials (gasars), where gaseous phase appeared to be reinforcement increasing the hardness. 

Vladimir Shapovalov published over 450 scientific works, including 3 monographs, 3 study guides, over 250 author's certificates of USSR and patents of United States of America, Germany, China, Japan and Austria. 

In 1993 he was chosen as  academician of Academy of Sciences of Higher school of Ukraine.

In 1994 he awarded a medal of Yaroslav the Wise for advances in science and pedagogics.  In 2007 and 2013 created technologies on obtaining new materials won prizes as one of the 100 best development projects of USA.
